Dear QI Families and Students,
My name is Mr. Ian Boze and I am the Math department chair at QI Roberts. I wanted to take a moment and provide an update to you about Math at QI. We were very happy to get our PSAT results back from the fall test date. It shows continued growth by our students as we strive to help students improve SAT scores. Our hope is that most of our students will one day be scoring a 1200 or higher, which will help them gain admission to top universities. We are pleased with the direction we are going, but we know that we still have work to do. We hope we can count on our families to help us achieve our goals.
One of the ways we can move closer to our goal is ensuring students have the practice they need in order to master mathematics. Just as an athlete, musician, or actor practices to get better at their craft, so too must students practice their math skills. Homework is one of the ways we can provide that practice. As families, you can help us encourage students to complete their homework with effort and focus, while also avoiding online tools. Students who do not complete homework or those who rely too much on online tools, such as Mathway or Photomath, rob themselves of the chance to learn and grow. It is not necessary for you to know how to do the math in order to help your student with their homework. Just being a sounding board for them, getting them to talk about math and supporting their productive struggle is helpful. Encourage them to break up larger assignments into smaller chunks that feel more manageable.
Another tool we are using to help us achieve our goal is our adaptive learning program, ALEKS, which we use in all of our classes except for AICE Math and Honors Calculus. The benefit of this software program is that it provides the practice mentioned above and it does so in a way that is customized to each student's ability level. Students can receive immediate feedback and support if they need it. When used well, this tool helps teachers know exactly what their students are ready to learn.
Students will be taking a semester knowledge check soon and we want them to try their best to show us what they can do. It is our goal that students should be 70% or better in their ALEKS course by the end of the year, so it follows that they should be between 40 and 50% at the end of the semester, January 12th. We encourage you to ask your students about their ALEKS progress. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your student’s teacher.

Los estudiantes que no completan la tarea o aquellos que dependen demasiado de las herramientas en línea, como Mathway o Photomath, se privan de la oportunidad de aprender y crecer. No es necesario que sepa cómo hacer las matemáticas para ayudar a su estudiante con su tarea. Ser una caja de resonancia para ellos, hacer que hablen de matemáticas y apoyar su lucha productiva es útil. Anímelos a dividir las tareas más grandes en partes más pequeñas que se sientan más manejables.
Otra herramienta que estamos usando para ayudarnos a lograr nuestro objetivo es nuestro programa de aprendizaje adaptativo, ALEKS, que usamos en todas nuestras clases, excepto en AICE Math y Honors Calculus. El beneficio de este programa de software es que proporciona la práctica mencionada anteriormente y lo hace de una manera personalizada para el nivel de habilidad de cada estudiante. Cuando se usa bien, esta herramienta ayuda a los maestros a saber exactamente lo que sus estudiantes están listos para aprender.
Los estudiantes tomarán una revisión de conocimientos semestral pronto y queremos que hagan todo lo posible para mostrarnos lo que pueden hacer. Nuestro objetivo es que los estudiantes tengan un 70% o mejor en su curso ALEKS al final del año, por lo que se deduce que deben estar entre el 40% y el 50% al final del semestre, el 12 de enero.
