"The Enchanted Dream"

By: Abigail Brauman and Gracie Jordan

Our Film Project

Creative Critical Reflection

Throughout our film me and my partner Gracie Jordan used special effects like moving sparkles and a few others in order to present a sense of magic. We also made the story about a young girl who keeps having the same recurring dreams.

Our film engages with the audience in many ways. One way it engages with the audience is through the narrator who is speaking directly to the audience. Another way is through the part of the film where the young lady is having a bad dream and that dream is being played for the audience so that they get an idea of how the film is going to go without knowing absolutely everything.

It helped my production skills by helping me to realize that even the smallest detail matters like clothes and hair. It also helped me realize that the sounds around you will affect how your video sounds. For example if there are people talking or cars passing and your films are supposed to be in a quiet nature scene then it will mess up the whole idea of the film.

The technology that we used to produce our film was our I-phones. We used my I-phone to film all of the shots we needed and Gracies to edit them together. We did this by using an editing app called capcut. Using capcut gave us the ability to add special effects and add the diegetic and nondiegetic sounds to our film.

Killing Eve: Project Update

Recently as a class we watched the intro to A Handmades Tale, Big Little Lies, and Killing Eve. Out of these three films we focused the most on Killing Eve. We started by looking at the Mise-en-scene. Then we looked at the shots. We observed that the mise-en-scene of Killing Eve is that it’s set in an Ice Cream Parlor in Vienna. The Ice cream parlor can be assumed to be antique because the Ice Cream bowls are silver like the ones they used to use back in the mid 1900s and the outfit that the ice cream scooper/man is wearing is similar to what was worn back in the 1900s. We also observed that the shots were mirrored between the main character and a little girl. The shots between these two were over the shoulder shots and shots that zoomed in to a close up shot. There was also side shots of the ice cream scooper/man.

Project Update:

Me and my partner Gracie have not yet started filming. We have been planing our shots in order to make them as good as possible so that the film stands out and is not boring. We have already chose where we want to film our shots for example in an area close to our school agriculture farm and at the ravine gardens state park. Our script is not perfect and may be modified as we film. For the most part we have decided what our wardrobe will be but we’re not one hundred percent sure our plan will work out.

Screenplay

This week we spent our time watching videos on how to storyboard. After watching the videos we started to practice drawing faces and bodies with the help of Mr. Bergen. We did this in hopes that it will help to improve our storyboards in the future. My partner Gracie and I were both responsible for creating our own storyboard. We started by creating pictures of how we think our film introduction will look.

Our first shot will be of a book on a platform in the middle of a room. The shot will start as a far away wide shot and then slowly zoom in to a close up of the book with (title of story) written on the front. During this zoom in a voiceover will begin giving the audience a small background story of the main characters.

The next shot will be of the book open on the table with a preview of what is going to happen in the story. The book will open and flip pages on its own as if it is magical. During this shot the narrator is still talking.

The third shot will be after the book has flipped through all the pages and lands on a blank page. Once the book lands on the blank page the camera starts to zoom into the page. As it zooms in twinkly sparkles lead the camera into the nature. During this whole scene the narrator is still speaking.

Enchanted

Enchanted

"Enchanted"(2007) is an American live-action/animated musical fantasy romantic comedy film. The film starts with the words Walt Disney pictures presents over the book titled enchanted. After it shows the cover of the book the book opens to the first page which is a pop up page.

Pop up Book

When it flips to the first page the narrator who has a soft voice starts telling the story as the page gets flipped to the second one. As the narrator finishes the film starts zooming in on a girl through her widow dancing. Once we are in her room we find out that she can talk to animals and the animals can talk back. As the two minutes are almost over we see from the animals point of view what she created; this helps to set a theme for the film. The sounds of nature and soft sweet music play through the whole first two minutes. The sounds and visual pictures as well as the narration establishes that the movie is a fantasy film.

Descendents

Descendants

“Descendants”(2015) is a Fantasy/Musical film. The film starts by presenting a book that opens up to an ipad that states the producers and then the name of the film popping out of the Ipad this helps to make the film seem magical. After presenting the name of the film a younger kind of sassy sound girl starts telling us the background of the story.

Tablet

As the narrator speaks a hand and pop ups from the Ipad give whoevers watching the film a visual to help them understand what is being talked about. After the narrator finishes it starts giving us more current things that are happening and introduces us to the main characters and starts the plot of the film.

The School for Good and Evil.

Good

“The School for Good and Evil” (2022) is a Fantasy/Adventure movie. The movie starts by presenting two film companies,Netflix and then it states the title of the film. To make the movie more interesting the word good appears into the title with sparkles around it and the word evil appears in a cloud of green.

After presenting the titles of the film the movie starts with a little bit of text to tell you the beginning of the story. After the text fades away we see two brothers running and fighting each other with magical swords. At the end of the two minutes we find out that the evil brother got forbidden powers and tries to kill his brother. One brother falls off a cliff.

Brother Fight Scene

The intro to this film helps the watcher to become more interested in it by giving some action and a plot. The film uses thirds very well as it follows the characters. It also uses head shots to show us what the two characters look like. The film also uses a little bit of dialog from the characters to let the audience know what their characteristics are like. All this together represents the theme of fantasy very well.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

“Beauty and the Beast”(2017) is a Musical/Fantasy film. I could not find a video with the title or producers of this film presented in it.

The film starts by presenting a castle. The shot zooms out to a woman's hand touching a rose with the castle in the background. Then it slowly zooms into the flower which turns into makeup that is being put on someone important. A strong and french sounding woman starts telling the background of the film.

Prince with makeup

This film represents fantasy very well by playing magical music in the background. The movie uses a shot looking up at the prince to represent that he has power; it also uses the same shot to show that the old lady who turns him into the beast has power over the prince.

Film Score Videos

These two films were made by me and my partner Gracie. They are the same film but have different soundtracks to them. We were assigned to make it that way to show that sound affects the way something seems. Like if you added a scary/creepy song to a video of someone walking through a hall making the audience think they are going to get scared and then taking that same film and putting a happy upbeat song to it making it seem as if they were headed to do something they were excited about. In our films we chose the iconic theme song from Pirates of the Caribbean to make it silly/fun and the theme song from Jaws to create a sense of suspense and horror.

My role in this project was to help plan the shots and then film them. I feel as if the final project could have been better. We did much better with our first film which was a music video based on the song “It Is What It Is” by: Jenna Raine. In my opinion we should have thought over our shots a little more before filming the final product. I did like the songs we chose to go with our films; they fit really well with what was happening in the shots. I also liked the prop we used which was a leaf that we gave eyebrows to in order for it to look angry.

While watching my peers' videos I learned that you can change the focus of the camera from one person to another. I learned that from the films that Jae’Lynn, Mackenzie, and Caleb made. In the future I will try to incorporate a more steady shot. I will also try to make the shots flow together so it doesn't look choppy. Over all this was a fun project that really helped me understand film shots and how to make them better.

Moonlight & Mistletoe

Throughout November we have been talking about gender representation in film and television. Gender representation is used a lot throughout many films and television. In class we were going to watch a little bit of Big Little Lies and reflect on it but instead we watched a Hallmark movie from a dvd Mr. Bergen had because we are currently unable to watch movies and television shows from any platform like netflix, hulu, peacock, etc… due to the new restrictions that have been put into place.

The Hallmark movie we watched was called Moonlight & Mistletoe. This movie stars Candace Cameron Bure as Holly, the daughter of Nick. Nick is a single father who plays the role of santa claus at “santaville” the little area he owns and lives at. When Holly was young she worked for her father in the gift shop and her father called her his number one elf. In the shop she met Peter, a guy that “makes things” . She told him about the nutcracker and he left her a necklace he made. Fifteen years later Holly is working at an office and finds out that her dad got hurt in a sledding accident so she goes home not intending to stay for christmas. She meets an old classmate who sets her up on a date with a guy named Ben. She later finds out her dad is having financial issues and the man she met on the date offers to help her. Her dad realizes she is struggling and really missing her mother after having an argument so he shows her a box of stuff that belonged to her mother and in it was a mistletoe. Peter, the boy she met 15 years ago, now works for her dad in Santaville. She remembers who Peter is and then finds out that the dude (Ben) she went on the set up date with is trying to ruin her dad’s business. They sell the nutcrackers that Peter makes in order to raise enough money to save the business but it doesn't work until Holly's boss comes to buy a nutcracker for the exact amount they needed to save the business. The business is saved and her and Peter kiss.

Holly was a businesswoman whose father got into a sledding accident so she went back to the small town where she grew up to take care of her single father because her mother passed away when she was really young and she has no siblings to help out either. Her father wants her to stay at home for christmas he even shows her a box of things that were her mothers which included a thing of mistletoe. As she spends more time with her dad she finds out that they are going through financial struggles. She starts to date a man that works in finance but then falls in love with a man who “makes things”. She met him when she was younger and he now makes nutcrackers because she told him about how she loves the nutcracker. At the end Holly and the man that “makes things” kiss under the moonlight.

Representation

Media has a major impact on the way we perceive people, places, and many other things. This is what we refer to as Representation. Representation is defined as the constructed and mediated presentation of people, things, ideas, places, etc. Media does this through many movies and shows it makes. Sometimes it could be a good representation and sometimes it can be bad. I will be specifically looking at the ways it affects christians, teens, and christian teens because that's what I am.

A Week Away

One representation of how the media can impact the way we perceive things is the movie “A Week Away”. The world usually perceives Christian teenagers as immature girls and boys who wear a cross around their neck and put ‘John 3:16” in their instagram bio. However, that perception is so far from accurate when referring to true and honest teenage Christians. The movie, “A Week Away” does a good job of accurately representing the growth and maturity of not only Christian teenagers, but also teens who weren’t Christians at first that actually gained a relationship with God. Therefore, this movie gives a differing perspective on teenage Christians on the other side of the mirror.

Mean Girls

Another representation is the movie Mean girls. Many movies like this make teenagers, especially the girls look bad. In this movie it portrays teenagers as shopping addicts that hang out with certain crowds in order to become more popular. While this is true for some teenagers, not all teenagers are the same. Teens are very complicated people who just need a person in their life that understands them and can help them. Most teens when coming to a new place try to make friends because they feel like an outsider. Mean girls portrays this by making it seem as if she did it to be the most popular girl at school but really she just wanted to fit in and that got her roped into something bigger that caused her to lose her real friends.

God's Not Dead

Last but not least is the movie God's NOT Dead. The movie is based off of a song written by Newsboys called God's Not Dead. This movie represents a christians beliefs very well. In the movie it shows lots of people who are not sure what they believe in and even some people who know what they believe in but are too afraid to defend it when necessary. It shows how strong a christians faith in God can be. It shows how he puts obstacles in people's lives that in order to get past them they have to believe that God can help them and guide them through.

Music Video Creative Reflection

Last week Gracie and I worked on creating our music video. After we finished and submitted our music video along with our classmates, we watched them on Thursday as a class. Now that we are done watching each other's videos and reflecting off of them we have been assigned with reflecting on the process of our own video. Our music video took some brainstorming and precise planning to create it. We started by listening to the song while creating a storyboard of ideas that we would create. After that we created a color palette so we would have an idea of how things should flow. One of the shots that was filmed was of Gracie holding a tank top in her laundry room. This was filmed on a stool that was pressed up against a wall. She also filmed one in her car at night. Two of the shots were filmed at my house in the backyard. The first one was filmed on a chair using poster board, a bowl with fake lemonade, and a plastic lemon that was dropped into the bowl. The other shot was made by pouring water into a cheese grater that was held above a flower to make it look like it was raining. Many of the shots were filmed at school. One of those being in the girls bathroom. In this one we stood in front of the mirrors and messed with our hair like we just woke up. Three of the shots filmed at school were filmed in Mr. Bergens room. One of the shots was of us singing the lyrics and another was of the word oh on the white board. The last one was a variety of baby pictures that we zoomed in and out on. The majority of our shots were filmed inside and outside the band room. Two filmed in the band room were one of us falling to the ground and the one of me playing the piano. Some were even filmed in front of the gym. We used my phone and Gracies phone to film all the shots, then we used Cap Cut to edit our video.

Reflecting on the video Gracie and I made I realized that we were mainly able to complete the look and style we were shooting for in our music video. There were a few parts in our video that were kind of rushed so they did not match the idea like the pictures on the phone but other than that it was pretty spot on to what we were intending it to look like. I realized while watching my peers' videos in class on the Thursday after we finished that most of them were filmed outside of school. I also realized that a lot of their videos were long continuous shots instead of a bunch of short shots. Some of their shots were also repetitive. The camera moved and even sometimes followed them. Reflecting on the music videos that my peers provided, there were a lot of different variations of uniqueness and technique. Each music video was different and gave a different meaning or appeal.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a romantic/drama film that was published in 2005. The publisher of this film is Joe Wright. Wright does a really great job of setting a scene. The scenery of this film really helps to represent the mood and period of this film. It shows this when the cows are running in the background and the geese are in the pond that is in front of the house. It also shows it when the maids are cleaning the white linen and the man is feeding the ducks. The house in the film also represents it because it's an old brick house from the 1900’s.

As the beginning scene starts the sound of a piano like music slowly comes in over the diegetic sound of birds chirping in the wild. In this scene the camera slowly pans in over the scene of trees and a field that surrounds the Bennet estate. In this scene the sun is slowly flooding in over the trees and the field. This happens until the name of the film fades into shot. After the name of the shot it shows the main character with the sun shining behind her making it seem as if she is glowing. In this scene the main character is reading a book as she walks in the field. She then towards the end of the shot closes the book and pats it in a friendly and loving way.

The continuous shot starts at one minute fifteen seconds where Elizabeth Bennet, the main character, is walking through the white linen that is hanging on the clothesline outside the Bennet estate. It continues to a door where Elizabeth leaves the scene and the shot starts walking into the house. As the shot goes through the house Elizabeth's family slowly starts being introduced to the film starting with one of her sisters sitting at the piano playing the song that we thought at the beginning was a non-diegetic sound. Then it presents the eldest sister at the bottom of the steps and then the two youngest sisters running down the stairs giggling. Then it shows Elizabeth again but this time she's walking outside the front door where we see ducks and a man throwing the ducks seed. After it shows the ending of the shot which is an over the shoulder shot of Elizabeth's Mother and father talking in her fathers office.

Question of Destiny

This week we have been working with Forrest Gump. In the beginning of the  film Forest sees a feather  that landed at his feet and he picks it up and puts it in his book. He later on sees the feather float away after he sends his son on the bus to school. The feather seems to represent forest's destiny because it comes in at an important part of his life. It comes in while he's at the bus stop waiting for his bus to Jenny's apartment and then ends at the school bus stop where he drops off his son.

Forrest Gump returns home when he finds out that his mother is sick; this is when destiny is first mentioned. His mother says to him that everyone has a destiny and she believed her destiny was being Forrest's mother. Forrest asked what his destiny was and she said that was for him to figure out. Destiny was mentioned again close to the end while Forest was at Janny’s graveside under their favorite tree. He said to her that he doesn't know whether we all have a destiny or if we're all just floating around all accidental like.

What I got from this film is that the feather seems to represent Forrest's destiny because it comes at an important part of his life. It lands at his feet and he picks it up and puts it in his book while he's at the bus stop waiting for his bus to Jenny's apartment. The feather leaves when it falls out of the book while he's at the school bus stop sending his son Forrest to school. I feel that his destiny is similar to what his moms was only his destiny is to raise a child that is smart and has no physical issues.

Top Gump

Forrest Gump (1994): The film of Forrest Gump follows third throughout the whole intro. The font and sound of the beginning is very soft and calm. As the film starts there is a feather that floats across the screen going up and down the screen as it floats through the sky into the city making its way to Forest's feet. The main scene of the film after the credits finish is the bus pulling into the bus stop. As the feather floats it is in a continuous shot until 2:38 where it switches to the clip of the bus pulling in. This film represents diegetic sounds by playing soft piano music throughout the whole scene then it shows non diegetic sounds by adding sounds of cars and people walking in the background. The feather that is shown eventually stops floating and lands at forest feet, then soon after the film cuts at 2:38 for the first and only time. The last two minutes of the film slowly zooms into forest gump. Throughout the zoom in they keep forest in the middle third of the screen. The end of the scene ends with Forrest Gump trying to remember his first pair of shoes.

Top Gun (1986):    During the opening scene of this film we can see that the background is black during the credits all the way till after the name of the movie pops up in bold lettering. During the credits it plays a more masculine song while presenting a more masculine font on top of a black background. As the film goes the music starts to intensify. Throughout the first two minutes of the film there were roughly ten different shots taken. The music slowly builds into a more intense song called “Highway to the danger zone”. When this song starts playing it causes the shots to be more frequent. You can tell very quickly that Top Gun is a different genre then Forrest Gump. Top Gun is more of an action movie while Forrest Gump is more of a drama/romance movie.
